When to Book Newborn Photos
When to book newborn photos in Frisco and North Dallas, why timing matters more than any other detail, and a simple checklist to prepare.
The most common question we hear is when to book newborn photos, and the short answer surprises most first time parents: while you are still pregnant, usually during the second trimester. Newborn sessions run on a schedule set by your baby, not your calendar, and photographers with any kind of following fill up months in advance for specific due date windows. Booking early is not about impatience. It is about making sure a date on the calendar actually exists for you when the time comes.
Why Timing Matters More for a Newborn Session
Every other type of session on our calendar gets scheduled around a fixed date. Newborn sessions do not work that way. The best window for the soft, sleepy, curled up newborn look is the first five to fourteen days of a baby’s life, before regular sleep and feeding patterns start to firm up. That window is short, it cannot be predicted with certainty (babies arrive early, late, and occasionally very fast), and it does not move for anyone’s schedule but the baby’s. A photographer needs to hold flexible availability around your due date rather than a single locked appointment, and that only works if the conversation starts early.
In Frisco and North Dallas specifically, the family with a summer or early fall due date is competing with every other family whose baby is due around the same time, all reaching out to the same handful of photographers who offer in-home newborn sessions. A due date window that feels far away in month four can be fully booked by month seven. Reaching out early costs you nothing (a conversation about your due date does not commit you to anything), and it means you are choosing your photographer instead of picking from whoever still has room left.
A Simple Booking Timeline
Second trimester (around week 20 to 27). This is when we recommend reserving your spot. You do not need an exact date yet, just a due date and a retainer to hold your place on the calendar. This is also the easiest time to book a maternity session if you want one, since the two conversations naturally happen together.
Week 36. We confirm your due date window and talk through backup contact plans (who calls us, and how fast) so that when labor starts, there is nothing left to figure out.
Baby’s arrival. A quick message from you (or your partner, we know the first days are a blur) puts us on standby. If you are also booking a Fresh 48 session, this is when that gets scheduled too, typically within the first two days at the hospital or at home.
Days 5 through 14. This is our target window for the in-home newborn session itself, a relaxed two hour visit with no props and no rigid posing, siblings and parents included in the frame.
How We Hold Your Date
Booking early works because newborn and Fresh 48 dates are never locked to a single calendar day in the first place. A 50 percent retainer reserves a window around your due date, not one fixed appointment, and we confirm the exact day once your baby has actually arrived. That retainer is not refundable, since it holds your spot and turns away other families asking about that same window, but it also means your due date shifting by a week (as due dates often do) does not put your session at risk. This is different from a family or maternity session, where a specific date gets picked and held from the start.
What Happens If You Book Late
Newborn sessions booked after the baby has already arrived are still possible, but the odds get slimmer by the day. Two things work against a late booking: photographer availability (a popular due date window is often reserved by other families weeks or months ahead), and the newborn look itself, which becomes harder to capture once a baby passes the two week mark and starts holding a more alert, awake posture. If you are past that window, we still recommend reaching out. A different, equally beautiful lifestyle session is always possible, it just will not look like the classic sleepy newborn portraits.
Newborn Session Prep Checklist
A little preparation in the weeks before your due date makes the session itself calmer for everyone.
- Pick your session type. In-home newborn only, or paired with a Fresh 48 session at the hospital. Both can be booked at the same time.
- Choose simple outfits. Solid, soft colors for parents and siblings. Save the patterns and prints for another day, they tend to compete with baby’s face in the frame.
- Plan the room. A bedroom with a window and some open floor space works better than you would think. We do not need a nursery set built for a magazine.
- Warm the house up. Newborns are more comfortable, and sleep more soundly for photos, in a warmer room than usual. We will remind you again closer to the date.
- Keep the guest list small. Parents, baby, and siblings are the priority. Extended family sessions can always be scheduled separately once everyone has recovered.
- Expect a full gallery in 2 to 3 weeks. Every photo we select gets fully edited, so there is no rush needed on your end once the session is done.
